"Any singer who starts
an album with a Stanley Turrentine cut and includes Chick Corea,
Horace Silver and Miles Davis tunes is either very talented or very
brave (or as here, indeed, both). Richards', mature rich and rounded
voice does really well with some of the more difficult material on
this album. .... Some very good players with her too, like trumpeter
Paul Christmas." JazzReview magazine,
October 2006
“Although
she has been singing professionally for quite
a few years, this is Richards'
first album and the first time I have heard her sing. She comes trailing accolades
and this is understandable as she has an attractive voice, huskily
warm and she presents her material with flair and understanding. Her
accompanists here are solid, the
core trio being her regular working band, and the guests provide
some interesting moments,
especially Christmas, playing tightly muted on the opening track
and elsewhere providing a lively spark to the proceedings. The
jazz singing scene in the UK
is crowded at the moment and for a singer to make her mark she needs
not only vocal ability but also determination and old-fashioned
push. Quite clearly, Richards'
has the chops; it remains to be seen
if she has the other qualities. I rather hope so. Good sound and a
brief encomium from
Michele Hendricks
complete
an attractive package. “

““Vocal jazz is
alive and well in England in the person of Brennie Richards!
On this, her first
recording under her own name (a crime), through a selection of known
and not-so-known standards (with an original lyric and a pop/jazz
tune thrown in for good measure) Brennie shows what she's got and
demonstrates her love and understanding of what vocal jazz is all
about. Happy, sad, whimsical, clever, sultry, swingin – its all
here.
Backed by a solid
rhythm section throughout and with delicious contributions by gifted
trumpeter Paul Christmas (pun intended) and saxophonist Stan
Robinson, Brennie literally romps through her own and pianist Pete
White's tasteful arrangements. She and the musicians all had a
ball recording this CD and it shows. Or should I say it
sounds!
Yay, Brennie!
It's about time and was definitely worth waitin' for. Straight
ahead...". Michele Hendricks
"Congrats
on your gorgeous CD!!! It is really fabulous - your voice, your
musicians, your choice of songs. And it looks great too. As they say
here in California....GO GIRL!". Melanie O’Reilly -

“…. highlights included
vocalist Brennie Richards – a soulful and very musical jazz
singer……”. Artsline Magazine –
February 2005
"this gig was a real

delivery". Stan Lodder, The
